It happens all the time! You have the glass of wine, can of coke etc. sitting on the table next to your laptop…. And then either you or someone else knocks it straight onto the keyboard Crisis!!
Taking the following steps will minimize the level of damage to your computer.
Depending on the amount of liquid spilt onto your laptop, and what you do immediately after will affect whether your computer has just been handed its death sentence. The problem occurs when liquid gets into the internals of the computer – although it may appear to work fine in the short term, the process of corrosion has begun and the problems will only increase from there.
Step 1
Turn the computer off, Pull the battery out, unplug your computer from the wall and leave it OFF!
Step 2
Turn your computer upside down as soon as possible. The best place for the liquid to escape is back out through the keyboard. Turn your pc upside down on a towel and leave it for a few hours.
Step 3
Take it to your local trusted computer repair center (upside down if possible). They will disassemble your laptop and assess how much liquid has made its way in and how much damage has occurred.
They may recommend that all data is transferred off the hard drive in case the computer can’t be repaired.
If you are quick enough, you may save your computer.
In some laptops, there is a protective plastic lining under the keyboard which helps to prevent things like crumbs getting into the important bits. If only minimal liquid was spilt, this lining can minimize damage.
In some cases, your computer will require replacement - in these cases... we hope you have insurance! In other cases, you might be lucky and get away with it.
As always, if in doubt - bring it in to us for inspection!
